Vitor Belfort When a rib injury forced middleweight champion Chris Weidman out of his planned UFC 184 title defense against Vitor Belfort , many wondered if Belfort would remain on the card and fight for an interim title. In fact, UFC President Dana White said at Saturday’s UFC 183 post-fight press conference that Belfort (24-10 MMA, 13-6 UFC) expressed interest in fighting for the interim strap – until he was offered Lyoto Machida as an opponent – at the Feb. 28 pay-per-view event in Los Angeles. Belfort took to Instagram to issue his response to the situation, which White called “typical Vitor.” In the post, Belfort speaks of times in which he fought injured or on short notice, and he stated that he is willing to fight any opponent, so long as he has eight weeks to prepare and the fight is for the full title, not an interim belt. The UFC is highly unlikely to strip Weidman (12-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC), who last defended the title in July 2014 against Machida (22-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC), meaning Belfort will likely be waiting for the champion to heal before stepping into the cage again, should he hold true to his word.
