Trash talk is one of the defining elements of the fight game. It can create narratives where they didn’t exist before, and help build up another layer of anticipation before two athletes step into the cage. Conor McGregor has long been known as perhaps the best talker in UFC history, but after Saturday’s UFC 264 event, where he suffered a first-round TKO loss to Dustin Poirier after succumbing to a gruesome leg break, he took it to another level. Perhaps McGregor’s (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) post-fight comments – where he threatened to kill Poirier (28-6 MMA, 20-5 UFC) and his wife, Jolie, in their sleep – does not even qualify as trash talk. But for the sake of conversation, let’s imagine it fits into that same sphere.
