The UFC’s heavyweight division has a champion who appears to get better each time he steps into the cage, but there are a few hurdles that must be cleared before he competes again. Francis Ngannou defended his throne against a very tough opponent and former training partner in Ciryl Gane at UFC 270, but is staring at a nine-month recovery period after he undergoes surgery on his injured knee. Not only will he be on the mend for a while, but he also has contract issues to sort out with the UFC. Considering the issues facing the champion, how should the rest of the division proceed? Gane entered UFC 270 as the interim champion, so would it be too soon for another interim title fight between the top two contenders?
