At open workouts for Saturday’s UFC on FOX 22, the women’s strawweight headliner said fans weren’t the only ones who questioned the promotion’s decision to open a 145-pound division without putting Invicta champ and UFC contractee Cristiane Santos ((17-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC)) in a title fight . “I feel like if they were making a (145-pound women’s division), they should build it around Cris ‘Cyborg’ – she really deserves it,” VanZant (7-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) told MMAjunkie in a rare note of discordance with the promotion two days before her FOX-televised fight against Michelle Waterson (13-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Calif. “If they’re not going to build it around Cris, then I think they should open up the 125 division, because there’s a lot of us that really should go up.” VanZant has found success in the UFC at 115 pounds, but said she would gladly try her hand in a heavier class if she had the chance. “We see a lot of girls that are missing weight at 115 because they can’t make that cut; it’s a huge cut for a lot of us,” she said. “I feel like I would go up to 125 if the division opened up.
