COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Short notice was no problem for Gilbert Burns at UFC on ESPN+ 18. The late replacement still managed to earn one of the biggest wins of his career over Gunnar Nelson . Although Burns (17-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) wasn’t able to put Nelson (17-5-1 MMA, 8-5 UFC) away, some big moments in the striking and grappling departments were enough for him to edge out two of the three rounds for the unanimous decision victory with scores of 29-28 across the board. The welterweight bout was part of the main card of UFC on ESPN+ 18, which took place at Royal Arena and streamed on ESPN+. Given the high-level grappling of both men, the first several minutes of course consisted of striking exchanges. Burns’ volume and accuracy was superior, though, because he managed to land some strong punches and hard low kicks.
