DENVER – After using his grappling chops to submit two UFC opponents in a row, jiu-jitsu black belt Davi Ramos wanted to showcase a little more of his stand-up game. Paired with a fellow lightweight who’s “not the best guy on the striking” in John Gunther (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC), Ramos (9-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), Ramos’ coaches figured that Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 139 could be just the occasion to do that. But then? “Man, they come in so close,” Ramos told reporters, including MMAjunkie, backstage at Pepsi Center. “As soon as I get him, I take him down, I say, ‘Man, I have to do my job.’” So that’s the story of how Gunther ended up tapping to a rear-naked choke less than two minutes into the FS1-televised preliminary card bout.
