MEXICO CITY – Augusto Montano (13-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) used a tireless onslaught of knees to the head and body to wear down and overwhelm Chris Heatherly (8-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC), pinning the smaller fighter against the fence with the assault before eventually forcing referee John McCarthy to call a halt to the bout at 4:50 of Round 1. The welterweight bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC 180 event at Mexico City Arena. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. Early on in this one it looked like the shorter, stockier Heatherly might be able to make Montano pay for his wild attacks, firing back with heavy counter shots and seizing the opportunity for a takedown in the first half of the round. But Montano proved to be up for the challenge, and after finding his range against Heatherly wasted no time turning up the pressure, forcing Heatherly back with a flying knee to the body. With Heatherly covering up against the fence, Montano poured it on to keep him on the defensive, mixing up the knees to the head and the body as Heatherly could only cover up and wait for the cascade of punishment to end.
