The former Strikeforce champion was an early favorite in Bellator’s Season 8 light-heavyweight tournament, where he knocked out Przemyslaw Mysiala in the opening round before meeting the resurgent Emanuel Newton in the semifinals. In one of the early year’s biggest upsets, Newton unloaded a perfectly placed spinning backfist to drop and defeat “King Mo.” Video of the Newton vs. Lawal fight remains one of the most highly trafficked stories in MMAjunkie.com history. Many fight fans took a certain type of glee in watching Lawal, who continually dropped his hands to his waist in the fight, knocked silly by the underdog.
