UFC contenders Glover Teixeira and Demian Maia , as well as Brazilian octagon girl Camila Oliveira, today took part in a ceremonial tree planting as part of a carbon offset initiative known as Ceara Carbono Zero at at Coco Park in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. Launched in 2011 by the Ceara state government, the Ceara Carbono Zero strategy offers guidelines for carbon emissions designed to support the regions renewable energy investments, such as solar and wind power, to protect the biodiversity of the Caatinga (a semi-arid scrub forest situated in northeast Brazil) and to offer a set of overall efforts to mitigate and compensate emissions. With the UFC’s participation in the program, Saturday’s “UFC on FUEL TV 10: Nogueira vs. Werdum 2″ event will be completely carbon neutral, according to UFC officials. “As a global leader in sports, the UFC is thrilled that its event can serve as a platform for bringing awareness and further helping the state government’s environmentally conscious initiative,” UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta stated.
