Kamaru Usman is not a fan of the BMF title. The inaugural belt was introduced when Jorge Masvidal fought Nate Diaz at UFC 244 at Madison Square Garden. After Masvidal stopped Diaz to claim the title , he stepped in on just days’ notice to challenge then-welterweight champion Usman at UFC 251. He lost the bout by unanimous decision. The pair rematched at UFC 261, but Masvidal lost by knockout . After Masvidal retired, the BMF title was brought back when Justin Gaethje knocked out Dustin Poirier at UFC 291 .
