The UFC made its third and final trip to Canada in 2014 with Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 54 event at Halifax Metro Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The six-fight main card was capped off by a statement performance from top welterweight contender Rory MacDonald (18-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC), who scored a third-round TKO of Tarec Saffiedine (15-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and made a strong case for the next 170-pound title shot. Another fighter made a case for a championship fight in the co-main event as bantamweight contender Raphael Assuncao (23-4 MMA, 7-1 UFC) outworked Bryan Caraway (19-7 MMA, 4-2 UFC) over three rounds for a convincing decision victory. The remainder of the main card saw four Canadians emerge victorious with Chad Laprise (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), Elias Theodorou (10-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), Nordine Taleb (10-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and Mitch Gagnon (12-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) all earning wins over their respective opponents. After every event, fans wonder whom the winners will be matched up with next. And with another night of UFC action in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look forward, put on a pair of Joe Silva’s and Sean Shelby’s shoes, and play UFC matchmaker
