Referee Jason Herzog was the center of attention both during and after the UFC on ESPN+ 29 main event. On Wednesday in Jacksonville, Fla., Herzog officiated the headlining bout between light heavyweight contenders Glover Teixeira and Anthony Smith . Despite Smith (32-15 MMA, 8-5 UFC) taking a tremendous amount of punishment during the third and fourth rounds, Herzog let the fight continue. Herzog eventually waved off the fight early in Round 5 due to strikes by Teixeira (31-7 MMA, 14-5 UFC), but the damage had been done. The non-stoppage up until that point sparked controversy in the MMA community. On Friday, Herzog issued a statement on Twitter.
