Welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry (15-1) suffered the first loss of his career to Shavkat Rakhmonov (19-0) in his last outing at UFC 310 in December. The match between the two was billed as a title eliminator bout. When an injury kept Rakhmonov from facing champion Belal Muhammad , the fight promotion opted to pit the champion against No. 5 ranked Jack Della Maddalena (17-2). Garry thought he should have gotten the call to fight for the title despite coming off a loss and has been vocal about it. “I think the word ‘withdrew’ is kind of the word that bugs me on that because I don’t believe Shavkat withdrew due to the choice of not wanting to fight for a title. From what I’m hearing is more an injury, an injury that I absolutely believe he sustained in the fight with me due to the amount of heel kicks I put to his knee,” Machado Garry said on the Ariel Helwani Show .
