After weeks of speculation, rumors and excitement over the possibility of seeing the former PRIDE heavyweight champion finally make his way to the UFC octagon – or even to the Bellator cage – the announcement came. Fedor would instead be fighting on New Year’s Eve in Japan for a promotion that technically doesn’t even exist yet. The announcement, and the fact that there are painfully few legitimate opponents for Emelianenko (34-4), was met with little excitement.
