LAS VEGAS – While boxing’s Golden Boy Promotions will likely make a strong bid for the honor, UFC President Dana White insists the UFC will host the first sporting event inside the $375 million Las Vegas Arena, which is set to open in 2016. On Thursday, White told USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie that officials at MGM Resorts International, who along with entertainment mogul AEG are building the the new multipurpose venue, have promised him the UFC will host the first sporting event in the new building – even after Golden Boy Promotions’ Richard Schaefer said he would like to use top pound-for-pound boxer Floyd Mayweather to christen the facility. “MGM already promised me the first date,” White said with a smile. “I don’t care what Schaefer says.” The 650,000-square-foot Las Vegas Arena will seat 20,000 fans for combat sports events
