Filed under: Featured , News , UFC After a week of speculation over the UFC 205 main event, including UFC President Dana White tweeting Khabib Nurmagomedov was next up for lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez , the promotion surprised everyone with Monday night’s announcement of Conor McGregor challenging for Alvarez’s belt. The news has been met with a mix of excitement and confusion. After all, White had seemingly ruled McGregor out for the UFC’s long-awaited return to New York and had previously said he needed to defend his featherweight title next or vacate it. Now, McGregor (20-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) faces Alvarez (28-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and will keep his featherweight title, despite his involvement with the Nov. 12 event at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden. White appeared on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” to discuss how the bout came together and why he initially said the shot would go to Nurmagomedov (23-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC).
