In need of a main event for August’s UFC on ESPN 5 card, a surprise welterweight main event was put together between Colby Covington and Robbie Lawler . Covington (14-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC), the former interim UFC welterweight champ, has been sitting out since June 2018 waiting for a shot at the undisputed belt. It seemed that opportunity may have started to slip away, though, so he decided to accept the fight with ex-titleholder Lawler (28-13 MMA, 13-7 UFC), who he called the “last real champion” at 170 pounds. There’s no argument Covington and Lawler are two of the best in the weight class, but given where both men are in their careers, as well as the divisional landscape, does it make sense?
