After a ponderous undercard for UFC Fight Night 93, including a prelim portion that saw six of seven bouts go to decision, two heavyweights in their late 30s walked out into Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany, and spent the first couple minutes of their meeting trying to crack open each other’s skulls with the enthusiasm of much younger men. Josh Barnett (35-8 MMA, 7-3 UFC) and Andrei Arlovski (25-13 MMA, 14-7 UFC) throwing leather with reckless abandon? If you squinted just right during those opening exchanges, you could almost convince yourself it was 2001 all over again. Of all the divisions to age so well, it’s funny that it should be heavyweight.
