First slated to fight Belfort (25-12 MMA, 14-8 UFC) at a catchweight in 2009 under the now-defunct Affliction banner, Mousasi’s (39-6-2 MMA, 6-3 UFC) repeated calls to figh t “The Phenom” went unanswered until a knockout victory over Thiago Santos at UFC 200. Once skeptical about the possibility of fighting for a belt within the three fights remaining on his current contract, Mousasi, who briefly was tapped to fight champ Daniel Cormier at the July 9 pay-per-view event before the installment of Anderson Silva, now said he’s in striking distance of the opportunity. “I think if I beat Vitor, you have (Ronaldo Souza) now and then I think Yoel Romero; those guys are ahead,” Mousasi told MMAjunkie backstage at UFC Fight Night 93 at Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany. “If I beat Vitor, then I’m right up there. But, of course, Chris Weidman and Luke Rockhold, they are ex-champions, so with one win they probably will get ahead of me.
