On the heels of a controversial and often bizarre event , an unofficial regulatory body has stepped into the fray to further confuse things. The World MMA Association, a self-reported nonprofit organization that, according to its website, “aims to be the official world governing body for the sport of mixed martial arts,” today issued a press release announcing the overturning of a controversial fight between Fedor Emelianenko (36-4) and Fabio Maldonado (22-10) at Fight Night Global 50, which took place June 17 at Sibur Arena in St. Petersburg and streamed on UFC Fight Pass. The association, which is headed by Emelianenko’s ex-manager and whose “honorary” president is the fighter himself, announced the fight, originally scored a majority-decision win for Emelianko, will now be considered a draw. Attached to the release were scorecards from a trio of judges who purportedly reviewed the fight and delivered unanimous 28-28 scores. The decision was reportedly met by dismissal by the Russian MMA Union, a WMMAA member whose vice president, Radmir Gabdullin, announced the result “cannot be overturned,” according to BloodyElbow.com reporter Karim Zidan.
