BRISBANE, Australia – In a fight that could hardly have been any closer than it was, Ross Pearson managed to do just enough to edge out Chad Laprise in the eyes of two of the three judges. After three back-and-forth rounds that saw Pearson (19-10 MMA, 11-7 UFC) acting mostly as the aggressor, with Laprise (10-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) relying on speed and movement, it was Pearson who won the split-decision victory, with wildly varied scores of 28-30, 30-27, and 29-28. The lightweight bout was part of today’s UFC Fight Night 85 preliminary card at Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass before additional prelims and the main card moved to FOX Sports 1. There wasn’t a round in this fight that could be considered easy to score, and perhaps no round was closer than the very first one. While Pearson went to work early on with a lunging left hook and a stinging kick to the inside of Laprise’s lead leg, Laprise used his footwork to set up multiple-punch combos and dangerous head kicks.
