Conor McGregor ’s coach said the search for a replacement in UFC 196’s headliner ranged from the featherweight division all the way up to welterweight before settling on Nate Diaz . “On Tuesday morning, a few other names were put forward as potential replacements,” John Kavanagh wrote in his regular column for Irish website The42.com . “The response from Conor was as you’d expect: ‘It doesn’t matter, they’re all the same.’” Diaz (18-10 MMA, 13-8 UFC) was booked opposite McGregor (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) when lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos (25-7 MMA, 14-5 UFC) suffered a broken foot in preparation for the March 5 pay-per-view event at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. So began the search for someone willing to face the UFC featherweight champion. But according to Kavanagh, McGregor never balked from fighting on March 5.
