MELBOURNE, Australia – UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger Holly Holm was going through the usual motions at an open workout for Sunday’s UFC 193, shadowboxing and dancing around mats set up on a concert stage in downtown Melbourne, Australia. Then she broke from the usual script, asking the crowd for an audience volunteer – a surprising move for one-half of a major pay-per-view headliner just days before her fight. Holm (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is a massive underdog against champ Ronda Rousey (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC), but she still has to make it to the 70,000-seat Etihad Stadium. It would be a colossal disaster if a slip or some other mishap by a stranger – untrained or not – led to a fight-canceling injury. For Holm, however, her thoughts were not on what could go wrong, but how she could make an otherwise pedestrian event fun for the fans. “In (Los Angeles for UFC 184), everybody was wondering what I was going to do because I was there before my coaches, and so they’re like, ‘What are you going to do for open workouts?’” Holm recalled.
