Herschel Walker had just gotten thumped, separately, by a pro kickboxer and an NCAA Division I wrestler from Purdue when MMA promoter Scott Coker approached him. It was the fall of 2009 at Legends Gym in Hollywood, Calif. Coker figured that after being put through the grinder, Walker would politely withdraw his recent pitch to fight in a cage, and he wouldn’t have to risk a retired NFL star’s health on national TV. Instead, Walker said he would move to California to start training full time. So when Walker stepped onto the canvas and won just four months later at “Strikeforce: Miami,” Coker wasn’t gambling as big as it appeared he was. Five years later, as the 20-year promoter prepares for “Bellator 142: Dynamite,” it might be a different story
