The Bellator lightweight was likely on his way to a TKO victory when he threw an illegal knee that rendered opponent John Alessio unable to continue at Bellator 139. “For some reason, I thought I was going to hit his shoulder, so in my head, I’d thrown to his shoulder,” Rickels told MMAjunkie Radio. “Then I realized I’d hit his head, and then I looked at the ref, and we gave each other the look like, ‘You’re in trouble now.’” Prior to the end of the fight, which came in the first-round, Rickels (16-3 MMA, 8-3 BMMA) had peppered Alessio (35-17 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) with big shots, forcing him to cover up and take a knee. “I don’t know in what parallel universe you smash a guy until he’s laying in the fetal position and then not win the fight,” Rickels said. “I don’t understand that.” Bellator 139 took place this past Friday at Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane, Kan
