What happens after that worries him. The UFC lightweight, who meets Tony Martin (9-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 62, recently read about UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman’s post-career struggles and came to the conclusion that there needs to be some sort of safety net in place for retired athletes. “A lot of money is being spent on anti-doping these days, but our sport hasn’t evolved in regards to pensions, some sort of retirement plan,” he told MMAjunkie. While the UFC does offer accident insurance and pays for fighters’ injures sustained in the promotion’s octagon, it does not presently have a program that supports them after they retire, though they offer advice on tax issues and money saving at an annual fighter’s summit. As independent contractors, however, fighters are responsible for saving earnings to sustain them when they stop fighting
