Benson Henderson Benson Henderson ’s decision to move up in weight from lightweight, where he’d captured the UFC championship, to welterweight on short notice to face Brandon Thatch at UFC Fight Night 60 was a surprise to many. But Henderson’s trainer, John Crouch, said that the move was something they’d talked about for some time. “He called me, but really it’s his choice,” Crouch told MMAjunkie Radio when asked if Henderson consulted him about the move. “He asked me what I thought and we’ve been talking about moving up to 170.” Crouch, head trainer at The MMA Lab in Arizona, said Henderson (21-5 MMA, 9-3 UFC) is a big lightweight who had competed at welterweight to start his career, and may have been spurred on to take a fight at 170 pounds after fighting Frankie Edgar.
