Frankie Edgar Right off I’ll admit it there’s a special place in this dark heart of mine for fighters who keep digging for finishes in the final seconds of a five-round fight that they’ve obviously already won. When they do it the way Frankie Edgar (18-4-1 MMA, 12-4-1 UFC) did it in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 57 headliner, snatching up a rear-naked-choke grip on the jaw of Cub Swanson (21-6 MMA, 6-2 UFC) and twisting it into the sort of neck crank that will not make you many friends down at your local grappling gymnasium (watch the Edgar vs. Swanson video highlights ), the parts of that heart that appreciate a little well-executed meanness light up with something not unlike happiness. A pitiless man who doesn’t mind wringing your vertebrae out like a wet dish towel just to finish work a few seconds early? That’s a man who is not to be trifled with.
