Despite losing an immediate opportunity to fight for the UFC heavyweight title, Fabricio Werdum said he was only “a bit sad” when his opponent and the stakes of his fight changed. “I’d been getting ready to face Cain Velasquez for a very long time, though my ultimate goal is the belt,” Werdum told MMAjunkie. When champ Velasquez (13-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC) injured his knee in training for their showdown at Saturday’s UFC 180 pay-per-view event in Mexico City, the promotion installed Mark Hunt as a short-notice replacement. Werdum (18-5-1 MMA, 6-2 UFC) and Hunt (10-8-1 MMA, 5-2-1 UFC) now meet for the interim heavyweight title as Velasquez recovers.
