Although middleweight Leandro Ataides now trains out of Evolve MMA in Singapore, the Brazilian got his start on the mats where a few famous fighters slept on the way to stardom: Nova Uniao. “I originally got into jiu-jitsu because I was always picking fights as a boy,” Ataides told MMAjunkie. “My mother enrolled me (when) everyone told her it might teach me some discipline. A friend introduced me to Wendell Alexander around the time he co-founded Nova Uniao. I haven’t stopped since.” The Brazilian gym would gain recognition for honing the skills of several UFC fighters and future champions such as Jose Aldo and Renan Barao
