The UFC 180 main event underwent a sudden restructuring on Tuesday when UFC officials announced Cain Velasquez is out of his scheduled heavyweight title defense against Fabricio Werdum and that Mark Hunt has stepped in to compete for an interim title. It’s been a year of injuries for the UFC, but this was a particularly big blow due since the organization was heavily relying on Velasquez to draw interest in its first event in Mexico. UFC 180 takes place Nov.15 and airs on pay-per-view from Mexico City Arena. Velasquez was not stripped of the title, which means he’ll unify the belts with Werdum (18-5-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) or Hunt (10-8-1 MMA, 5-2-1 UFC) once healthy. The UFC waited more than a year for Velasquez to recover from injuries sustained in his most recent bout.
