ABU DHABI – Twenty-five of the 27 fighters who took to the scale on “Fight Island” successfully made their contracted weights ahead of fight night at UFC 254. That group included both main event fighters, as UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0 MMA, 12-0 UFC) and interim champion Justin Gaethje (22-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) both hit 155 pounds for their main event title unification bout. However, it wasn’t without a little drama as Nurmagomedov emerged as the first fighter to weigh in, and immediately called for the towel. The undefeated Russian held his breath, then clutched his face in relief after making championship weight. There were no concerns over the co-main event, as middleweight contender Jared Cannonier (13-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) and former 185-pound champion Robert Whittaker (21-5 MMA, 12-3 UFC) made weight with ease for their bout. The two fighters to miss weight were Brazilian welterweight Alex Oliveira , who came in two pounds over fight with Shavkat Rakhmonov, and Joel Alvarez , who tipped the scale 3.5 pounds over the non-title lightweight limit for his bout against Alexander Yakovlev.
