In this holiday weekend edition of Trading Shots, MMAjunkie columnist Ben Fowlkes and retired UFC and WEC fighter Danny Downes discuss the role of politics in the world of MMA. Fowlkes: Danny, I know I don’t have to tell you that it’s America’s birthday tomorrow, that hallowed day when we stand around at a backyard BBQ, drinking beer and making small talk while waiting for it to get dark enough to enjoy some ritual explosions. Maybe it’s because this is a presidential election year, and a pretty heated one, but I find myself thinking about this recent Richard Deitsch column over at SI.com. In short, it asks whether sports media types should discuss politics publicly, or whether they should “stick to sports” on Twitter and elsewhere. Seems to me we could even broaden the question, especially as we see MMA figures like Chael Sonnen and UFC President Dana White coming out in support of Donald Trump, often to polarizing effect among the fan base.
